  1. 1839-1909. German chemist who perfected a
  2. process for recovering sulphur during the
  3. manufacture of alkali. Mond moved to England
  4. in 1862, and became a British subject in
  5. 1867. In 1873, he helped to found the firm of
  6. Brunner, Mond and Company, which pioneered
  7. the British chemical industry. His son Alfred
  8. Mond, 1st Baron Melchett (1868-1930) was a
  9. founder of Imperial Chemical Industries
  10. (ICI).
